IMPORTANT NOTICE Problem with Smart Notebook V9.0

The original version of Smart Notebook V9.0 released at BETT in January contains bugs and can become corrupt; once the software corrupts it is not possible to uninstall it or install a newer version over the top. The worst case scenario when this happens is that the hard disk has to be reformatted. Please check whether you have this software in your school, and dispose of it and uninstall it from all computers. Then install the latest version of Smart Notebook, which has had the bugs fixed. The latest version (V9.01) can be downloaded from:

http://www.smarttech.com/support/software/sb_win.asp

To check which version of the software you have on CDROM:
  1. Insert the CDROM; it will start to auto run. Close out of this and go to My Computer, right click on D: and select Explore.
  2. Click on the folder 'Software' and single click on the icon below to read the version. The newest version is pictured below. If it says SMTBrdSoftware90.exe, throw it away.

To check which version of the notebook is installed on a computer:
    1. Open the Smart Notebook.
    2. Click on Help and About Smart Notebook.
    3. Click on the Technical Support tab.
    4. The latest version will say 'Build 9.0.1.57 06:52:38 Jan 11 2005 '. This version is fine.
    5. The problem version will say 'Build 9.0.0.53 14:49:04 Dec 22 2004 '. Uninstall this version immediately - go to Control Panel and Add or Remove Programs. Scroll down to the Smart Notebook and click on remove.

You may be unable to uninstall V9.0 - this means that it has corrupted. If this happens, ask your technician to do the following:
    1. Use Windows XP System Restore to return to a restore point before V9.0 was installed. N.B. Back up any recent work before this is done.
    2. Download the cleanup patch from Smarttech and use it to remove V9.0. http://www.smarttech.com/support/software/sbsFAQs/upgradeProblems.asp
    3. Use a registry cleaner tool to remove all traces of the corrupt software.
    4. If all of the above fail, the only solution is to reformat the hard drive. Make sure all work is backed up first.

Please note: The next software upgrade, V9.1 is due out next week. I recommend you wait a week to avoid upgrading twice in a short period of time. Hopefully things will settle down for a while on the upgrade front after that!
