Flood Defence Schemes
Flood protection schemes include channel improvements and the construction
of flood defences. Controlled washlands at Dewsbury, Horbury, Wakefield,
Altofts, Methley and castleford provide areas where the river can spill
harmlessly over its floodplain.
Current schemes include:
- Batley Beck - channel improvements and flood defences to protect Batley
and Dewsbury;
- River Spen - channel improvements and flood defences to protect Cleckheaton,
Heckmondwike, Liversidge and Ravensthorpe.
- Fenay Beck - channel improvements and flood defences to protect local
residential property.
Proposed works include:
- The Lower Calder Washlands - alteration to spillway lengths to optimise
use of the washlands, benefiting Castleford and the lower valley.
- Thornes, Wakefield - construction of flood defences to protect commercial
properties.
- Lower Todmorden - improvement to flood defences and the channel below
Todmorden town centre.
- River Colne, Zeneca - reduce risk of flooding from Fenay Beck and
the River Colne.
- Walsden Water, Todmorden - possible joint venture with Calderdale
Council.
