The Aire and Calder Project

The Aire and Calder waste minimisation project ran from 1992 to 1995 following an initiative by the Centre for the Exploitation of Science and Technology (CEST). Its main aims were:

{ to demonstrate the benefits of a systematic approach to emission reduction;
{ to focus on procedural changes and cleaner technology; and
{ to identify gaps in equipment, technology and science.

Between them the companies involved made savings of over £3 million, with a possibility of maintaining this level in the future. In 10% of the projects the savings balanced the costs, a further 60% had a payback of less than one year. The savings were made in energy use and raw materials, as well as by reducing water usage and effluent discharge.
