Baby SEAL is a Kirklees development supporting SEAL in the Foundation Stage. The aim is to raise achievement for all children with a focus on boys' achievement.
The programme was developed with the support of four pilot schools; Cawley Lane J&I, Overthorpe JI&N School, Moldgreen Community Primary and Knowles Hill Infant School
Baby SEAL is a short term intervention to support children who are having difficulties accessing a Foundation Stage Curriculum either through challenging behaviours, lack of confidence or poor social skills. It particularly supports the Communication Language and Literacy and Personnel Social Emotional Development areas of learning. It revolves around an 'intervention group' model of 6 children, which includes 2 role models (similar to the SEAL silver set for Years 1&2)
It last up to 6 weeks with short sessions (10mins) 3 or 4 times a week and includes a whole class circle time once a week when the small group can feed back e.g. teach the others a new game.
The resource offers examples of planning to support the 'Good to be Me' and 'Getting on and Falling Out' themes, impact measure proforma, a pupil voice questionnaire and a document laying out how the intervention should be organized
In the first instance Baby SEAL is a group intervention but it is hoped that the activities will feed into the whole class, being reinforced and practiced in the daily classroom activities.
Included in the resource;
- A Programme plan explaining how to run the intervention
- Impact plan to record which children are being included and why
- A pupil voice questionnaire to ascertain the children's views before and after the intervention.
- Examples of planning that can be adapted to meet the needs of your group
