Geography, Geology and Environmental Science events

There are events at Leeds University for Key Stages 4 and 5 in this year’s Festival of Science, relating to Geography, Geology and Environmental Science. You can also see the full programme at our website at http://www.leeds.ac.uk/ace/access/festivalofscience.htm

Key Stage 4
Toil in the soil
Mon 22nd March 10:00-12:00

Max 30 pupils per school
Learn about the most diverse ecosystem on earth and find out why plants need "dirt" to stay healthy. Apply hands-on soil characterization techniques and use your new skills to explore the ecology of a tropical forest and savanna.

Key Stage 4
Eco-design in action
Thurs 18th March 10:00-12:00

Max 15 pupils per school
“In the good old days, if a person liked killing people, he had to become a general, purchase a coal mine, or else study nuclear physics. Today, industrial design has put murder on a mass production basis" (Victor Papanek). Could you be the designer who proves Papanek wrong? Learn how YOU have the power to change design's impact on the environment and society in this workshop. Will your group get the eco-design prize?

Key Stage 5
Hot under the collar
Weds 24th March 10:00-12:00

Max 30 pupils per school
Climate change is a ‘hot’ topic, but how do we know how the climate is likely to change in the next hundred years? And how does today’s climate compare with that of the past? In this workshop we take a long view of the Earth’s climate over geological time, and find out how information on the climate from thousands, or even millions, of years ago, is used to predict future climate trends.

Key Stage 5
The Fossil's Story
Thurs 25th March 13:00-15:00

Max 30 pupils per school
How do we know what the world was like millions of years ago? Studying environmental and evolutionary change over Earth's history helps us understand how modern systems have developed, and the study of fossils - palaeontology - is a key skill in this area of research. Find out how palaeontologists can reveal information about ancient environments, and the modes of life of extinct organisms in an interactive, practical activity using fossils and rocks from our extensive collection.

Key Stage 5
The Eco-Apprentice
Thurs 25th March 10:00-12:00

Max 15 pupils per school
A look at the range of technologies being developed to tackle the global crisis of climate change, and the science and technology behind both the problems and solutions. How could a degree in physical geography, science, engineering or technology help you get started in an exciting career in this growing sector and be part of the environmental revolution?
