A new piece of legislation called the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) Energy Efficiency Scheme is coming into force for the Council on 1st April 2010. Under this legislation, the Council has a legal obligation to account for all of its carbon emissions from building energy use including schools. It will become compulsory for the Council to ensure good carbon management practice and therefore we need to liaise closely with you to ensure the information we hold centrally is accurate. This will help us to identify where we are using too much energy and where we could save money.

The Government's Guidance "Working Together to Safeguard Children" (2006) states that 'all agencies and individuals should aim to proactively safeguard and promote the welfare of children so that the need for action to protect children from harm is reduced.' Kirklees LA used to facilitate an annual Forest Schools Level I 3 day training course for teachers at Cliffe House every May which generally filled up the 15 places available. This enabled many practising Kirklees teachers to become qualified in this distinct form of outdoor learning. The benefits are amazing, especially with your more kinaesthetic learners.

Further to the information provided 11 January 2010 about Highways gritting routes I have received further update from Highways department about the situation overnight last night and this morning

As of 5 January 2010 Building Services had almost run out of grit. Highways cannot restock Building Services as they are preserving supplies for the roads. Until Highways receive further deliveries it is unlikely that Building Services will be able to grit Schools. All other alternative supplies of grit have been tried. This situation is being monitored daily. Gritting will resume as grit is received by Building Services.

When weather conditions are severe, the headteacher or nominated deputy may decide that, for health and safety reasons, they have to close their school to children. How you subsequently handle the closure depends on whether you have taken the decision yourself (as headteacher or nominated deputy), or the decision has been taken by the Children and Young People Service (ChYPS)
