The PPA guarantee
Under the terms of the National Agreement, from September 2005 all teachers must be given a minimum 10 percent guaranteed professional time within the school day for planning, preparation and assessment. Guaranteed PPA time will contribute significantly to raising standards by giving teachers time during the school day in which to engage in individual and collaborative activity.
However, its introduction, in primary schools in particular, will need to be factored into the school budgeting process. We are offering workshops designed to support schools in defining their PPA strategy now so that it can be incorporated into agreeing the budgets and new timetables during the spring term.
Workshop places are limited to two representatives per school - this could be the head plus a governor or a member of the school leadership team or bursar/ finance officer.
Workshop objectives
These include:
- To set provision of a minimum of 10 percent PPA time for teachers in the context of workforce reform and remodelling
- To broaden understanding of the legislation on provision of PPA and what it means in practice
- To offer an insight into a range of strategies for implementing PPA and the benefits of each
- To provide information, tools and support for financial planning
- To provide materials and raise awareness of the support which schools can use to help in the implementation of PPA time
- To identify the opportunities that remodelling presents to broaden the curriculum, enhance learning and raise standards
- To highlight sources of remodelling support
